Dear Friend,

I know we've been friends a long time. We've worked together; gone to church together; homeschooled together. I have appreciated your advice and friendship over the years.

Today, I interviewed for a promotion at work. It's a leadership role with added responsibility, with a little added pay. It's a position I was asked to apply for.

You called me an idiot in front of all my co-workers... not once, not twice, but three times you called me an idiot. You put me down and said I don't know how to say no. All because I applied for a promotion.

I wanted to tell you that I can be a mother and have a job. I can enjoy my work and feel fulfilled by it. I wanted to tell you that even if I worked Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, I would still be a good mother. I wanted to tell you that I don't have to be identified only by my work at home. I actually went to college and have multiple certifications for this job. I support my family with this job. I wanted to tell you that maybe I actually want to move up. I wanted to tell you that I don't want to just get financially by working less and less until the point where I lose all my skills and become obsolete. I wanted to tell you that I can still work the same amount I am now and get this position. I'm not giving up my kids or family time to do more.

But I was too stunned.

So I said nothing.

I'm so sorry! I would have given her a verbal beating right there on the spot

Chris is totally correct...YOU are not the idiot! That makes me SO angry! To think someone would DARE say that about you!! Grrrr! Okay, I will calm down. So many people, like myself, follow your blog because we admire you! You are an amazing woman, an amazing mother, and someone worth looking up to. Thank you for your example to all of us on how a mother and a woman should be. Don't listen to the one negative voice, even though hers may seem the "loudest".

Sincerely,
Breclyn

Pray about this. Let the Holy Spirit guide you. The only problem I see is the summer. If it is something you would enjoy go for it.You love hands on work. you will never be an idiot. Best Wishes mom

Wow, I have never seen you speechless!! I know you never half way do anything, so if this is the path you feel you are being led down then go for it! You will still be a wonderful mother, teacher, nurse and multi tasker! Good luck!

So, so, sorry about the “friend’s” comment. You are a wonderful mom who makes such sacrifices for her kids and you are such an inspiration to me as I try navigate both worlds as a mom and an employee. When I start complaining because I have had just a few hours of sleep because one of my kids was up sick, I quickly get perspective when I remember that you work some nights, get little or no sleep, and then jump into homeschooling. That is just one of the most awful feelings when you are excited about a new opportunity and the people you thought you could count on to be happy for you, pour cold water on your joy. Please don’t let you joy be taken away. All the best on the promotion and just continue being you - a mom extraordinaire who is also happens to be a brilliant nurse.

Blessings.
